Actually, this branding name need not be a domain name as such.

What you’re researching and choosing is a name or term which will fit the kind of image you want for your products and business. For example, you may want to suggest superiority, quality, power, or whatever. You could choose a term or word such as “super” to suggest these qualities. However, I’m sure you could find a better one, especially for your needs. We’ll use it as an example.

What’s the best way to use such a term?

1 Actually use it in a domain name for a website, for example, where you display the array of your products. This could be something like: TheSuperProductsWebsite or just SuperProducts.

You can see it’s differentiating your products from others by using the name “super”, as well as associating those qualities we mentioned with those products and this website.

2 Put the term “super” in front of every product you create. There could be “Superautoresponder”,

“SuperEditor”, “SuperPDFMaker”, and so on. This is branding your products with a recognizable prefix.

3 You can be branding your name and business as a whole through your products. When you create a sales page for a product, you put your name on it, and also the name of your business and/or your central domain name.

4 Now, when you are repeating this term, in relation to your products and so on, across the internet through links of various kinds, you’re not simply creating an image of your organization but also a unique identity.

You want a domain name you can centralize your business around. This is very important and should not be overlooked. This is not your business name – if you register a business, the formal name of the business can be something else.

You could also think of it as a stand-in name and website. Mine is power-trust. I’m not using “power” in its domineering sense but more linked to the “power” gained through trust and honesty. If you go there, there may not be much development at all. I use the name as a reference point for my emails, such as, admin at that central domain, and for support needs. It’s used in my privacy policies and so on.

You can use the website flexibly, changing it as you wish to fit changing circumstances and as your business develops. So, you could leave it almost empty, put a few ads on or develop it as a central point referring to your products and services.

However, its main purpose is a marker for your developing business and a name which people will recognise as representing your business, the more you use it. You could have sub-folders with your main services in them, such as main tools or resources.

Without a central site, with a clearly identifiable domain name, your business may have no clear focus, even though you may brand it in other ways.

There are register sites where you can choose and register a domain. Many domain names are already taken, so you may have to be creative in getting yours. Usually, they’re about $9 a year.

It also follows that having the right address for your website or domain name also matters a lot in terms of being recognized and seen online. When you have the right domain name for your business, you attract more attention, you increase the name recall of your business, and people know exactly where to find you online because they remember your domain name.

So how do you find the right domain name for your business? You might first want to try out finding a domain name that matches the name of your business. It may not be an exact match, especially if your business name is one that is being used widely or is used by a company in another market abroad. However, you must try to keep the spelling and positioning of the words used in your company name as close as possible to the domain name you choose.

The best domain name for a business though is to use your city name and then your keywords. For example if you were a dentist in Miami the ideal domain name would be MiamiDentist.com. The generic version is always the best because it sets you up as the authority in your business niche and it can be sold to anyone who takes over your business.

On that note, you should also make sure that your domain name is easy to spell out in such a way that when people type your domain name as they hear it or type it out from memory, your website will come out. If you have a complicated sounding business name or if your domain name is difficult to spell, more often that not, you visitors and potential customers will be directed to the wrong site or will receive a message on their browser that the website they are trying to connect to does not exist.

In either situation, you have the risk of losing your customers. Most people will not bother to do any more research or type the domain name in Google to find out if they have spelled the domain name correctly. Sometimes, you only have one chance to get your potential customers where you want them. So make sure your domain name has great recall, is easy to spell and short enough for anyone (young or old) to remember.

If you are just starting out or if your company or brand name is not yet a household name, you will want to incorporate a keyword that represents your product or service into your domain name. This will help you when people are make queries or type out the keyword in a search engine query box. The search engine will present a list of search results corresponding to the keyword that was entered. And chances are, if your domain name incorporates that said keyword, your website will be ranked high among the list of search engine results.

Also, make sure that your domain name is catchy. This will make people curious with as to what your website has to offer, and will entice them to check it out. This means more visitors on your website, and more customers for your business.

Having said all that, the time to register that domain name as your own is now. Do not put off the act of actually having that domain name registered, once you have picked out and determined what the right domain name is for your business. With the way things are nowadays, your domain name may be claimed by another person who is setting up a website which may or may not be similar to what you are putting up.

For example when I looked up the domain “MiamiInternetMarketing.com” the domain Miami Internet Marketing was already taken. Someone had already registered the domain so I had to contact them and start negotiating the sale of the domain name. After going back and forth I finally got the domain name but of course had to pay a premium for it.

Maybe you’ve heard that a long domain name is a good idea. For a long time there was a limit to how many characters could be used in a domain name. Then that limit was increased to 63 and that makes for a pretty long domain indeed. A lot of Internet marketers then touted that a long domain name was key to getting good traffic. This can be true, depending on the type of website you are building and what your goals are.

If you are building a site for the sole purpose of driving traffic to it, then a longer domain name is just fine. You’ll want to focus on a longtail keyword and make sure your domain name consists of this keyword in its entirety. This makes the search engines look at your domain as one that is specifically dedicated to that search term. This will help your search rankings significantly because it seems that you’re invested and focused on that search term. If you follow through with it and include lots of information geared to that term, and expanding on it, then you should get good rankings and visitors.

However, if you are trying to build your website around users, and hoping that they’ll interact with your site and pass it on to others, you’ll want to go with a shorter domain. People are a lot different than search engines. While a search engine can scan your domain name and figure out how many words it contains and what those words mean in a fraction of a second, humans take a little longer. A long domain is hard on the eyes, and takes more than a few seconds to decipher if it contains more than 3 words. If you expect people to connect with it on an emotional level and care about it enough to share it with their friends, you’ll want to make the name cool and catchy, not long and wordy.

There are some exceptions to this rule of course, and many examples abound of sites that have longer names with several words and still manager to be successful. One example is MyLifeIsAverage.com which contains a four word sentence. They have a large number of users and it’s enjoyed lots of success and has gone viral. If you are planning to start a site of this nature, and have a cute and memorable sentence in mind, you might be able to pull it off.

It only takes a quick scan of the most successful sites on the planet to realize that generally speaking a short, memorable domain name is best. Facebook, Twitter, Google, Yahoo, MySpace, GoDaddy, Apple, Dell, Digg, WordPress, and countless other sites with short one word names that you can’t forget.
